Parappanangadi is a major town and local self-government institution situated on the shores of the Arabian Sea in the Tirurangadi Taluk of Malappuram district. Spanning an area of 22.25 square kilometers, the municipality encompasses two villages: Parappanangadi and Neduva. It is bounded by the Arabian Sea to the west, the Kadalundi River to the east, Vallikkunnu Grama Panchayat to the north, and Tanur Municipality to the south. Commercially and culturally prominent, Parappanangadi is a rapidly developing city equipped with modern infrastructure.

Parappanangadi holds immense significance in the history of Kerala. Since ancient times, it has been a bustling trading center maintaining strong commercial ties with Arab merchants. The roots of the Travancore royal family are historically linked to the Parappanad royal family. Kerala's first railway line, the Tirur-Beypore (Chaliyam) line, passes through Parappanangadi. Consequently, it is home to one of the oldest railway stations in the state. During the colonial era, Parappanangadi was part of the Ernad Taluk in the Malabar district, later becoming part of the Tirur Taluk, and currently falls under the Tirurangadi Taluk.

The topography comprises coastal areas with white sand and parts of Neduva characterized by red soil. Ullanam, often referred to as 'Mini Kuttanad,' is one of the major natural attractions here. The landscape is further enhanced by pine trees and vast paddy fields. Alongside its coastal proximity, the robust railway transport network significantly boosts the commercial importance of Parappanangadi.

This coastal town is culturally very rich. O. Chandumenon wrote 'Indulekha,' considered the first definitive novel in Malayalam, at his ancestral home in Neduva, Parappanangadi. This land has given birth to numerous eminent personalities, including educationists and renowned historians like M.G.S. Narayanan and Dr. M. Gangadharan. The historic Arab trade relations have heavily influenced the local lifestyle, language, and cuisine. The region has also made remarkable strides in sports, particularly in football, cricket, and baseball.

Traditional fishing is one of the primary livelihoods of the people here. The Parappanangadi Harbour, which began construction in 2017 and was completed in 2023, has provided a massive boost to the local fisherfolk and the broader economy. Additionally, the agricultural sector and expatriate remittances from the Gulf form the backbone of the municipality's economy.

For efficient administration, following the recent delimitation, the Parappanangadi Municipality is divided into 46 wards. Under the municipal council, modern e-governance systems, including K-Smart, are utilized to provide transparent and swift services to the public.

As part of establishing modern infrastructure, the municipality is actively advancing with crucial annual projects such as the establishment of a gas crematorium, the completion of the indoor stadium, and the construction of a new bus stand. Furthermore, proactive efforts are underway to make Parappanangadi a safer city by implementing a comprehensive Disaster Management Plan aimed at tackling local natural hazards like coastal erosion and floods. The systematic maintenance of LED streetlights through annual contracts and effective waste management initiatives remain key highlights among the municipality's recent developmental achievements.
